On our way home to Memphis we felt the need for a leg stretch and some exercise. I pulled up “Mr. Google” and found a recommendation for The Mallard Point trail that was just off of Hwy 72. We didn’t even have to divert because it was on our way.
.
I was excited about our hike, but it almost didn’t happen because the trailhead was hard to find.We drove by the waterpark, around the golf course, then made our way to the campground where I got out and asked. “Mr. Google” is great, but asking questions of real people cannot be replaced! Dianne and Ben knew exactly where we needed to go and even understood my confusion. We just hadn’t gone far enough past the waterpark to see the little sign.
What we finally found was a well-maintained,delightful trail along the Tennessee River. We met families who were dabbling in the river, couples from the campground who were walking dogs, runners, and the random fisherman. The flowers, birds, butterflies and bees were abundant but we didn’t see any evidence of gators or “ye ol’ loch ness” even though the signage told us to beware.
I highly recommend this easy hike. We managed to put in 5.5 miles before we resumed our travel. I deem the hike easy because I made it in walking sandals and white pants with no problems at all other than possible looking very overdressed for the activity.
If you are traveling around Decatur, Alabama and need a break, check out Mallard Point for an enjoyable hike.
