Our grand 3 year old, Ruthie, is obsessed with The Sound of Music. She stayed with us for a few days and we were treated to many renditions of all the songs, but her favorites are My Favorite Things and Do-Re-Me. I have to admit that I encouraged her mini concerts, even at 6 a.m.
Between songs we had a conversation about what the word favorite means. Ruthie had a very good answer – “whatever you like bestest of all.” And that led to talking about our favorite things.
Pink twirly dresses. Picking flowers. Sprinkles on cupcakes. Fat puppy bellies. Hot air ballons with butterflies on them. Swimming in the swimming pool. Riding on go-carts. Giggling. Baking cookies. Ice cream. Polar bears. And pink. Pink anything. Always pink, but especially dark pink. These are some of Ruthies favorite things.
My favorite things? The first fire pit evening of autumn, shared with friends. Old hymns and praise songs. Earl grey tea in the mornings. Letters in the mail. Porch swings. A really good book. Blue jeans that fit “just right.” Listening to my adult kiddos talk late at night. Toe tapping music. The beach, any beach, but especially a Florida sugar-sand beach. Sitting cozy with Jesse, under a blanket. Morning time with Jesus before anyone else is awake. And grands – all of them!
I find that as I get older and possibly wiser, my favorite anything has much more to do with people than things. Old friends to reminisce with, new friends to get to know. Family- the people who know me intimately yet still love me! And Jesus. Always Jesus.
What are a few of your favorite things? The things that make you smile? Join our conversation and list your “bestest” things of all.
MY FAVORITE THINGS
Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens,
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens,
Brown paper packages tied up with strings—
These are a few of my favorite things.
Cream-colored ponies and crisp apple strudels,
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles,
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings—
These are a few of my favorite things
Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes,
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes,
Silver-white winters that melt into springs—
These are a few of my favorite things.
When the dog bites,
When the bee stings,
When I’m feeling sad,
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad!
